Behind the brush
Pentland Ross is a classical equine artist based in Scotland, working in oils to explore the intersection of traditional equine art and Scottish heritage. With a background in art, design and photography bridges historical technique with contemporary vision. Each painting honours the classical equine portrait tradition while reflecting Scotland’s cultural landscape. Working from her studio, commissions are undertaken for private collectors and estates, with original works and limited editions available through direct enquiry.
Approach
Each work begins with a careful study of the subject and setting. Working in traditional oils, the focus remains on classical composition, accurate anatomy, and the relationship between horses and landscapes. The Scottish Heritage Collection explores cultural icons from Charles Rennie Mackintosh to the Kelpies through equine portraiture, creating contemporary works rooted in Scotland’s artistic legacy.
