Behind the brush

My paintings bring together contemporary Romantic painting with classical equine and figurative traditions, shaped by Scotland's cultural inheritance, landscape and sense of place.

At the heart of my work is an interest in elegance not simply as beauty, but as grace, refinement, dignity and restraint. Through horses, figures and Scottish landscapes, I explore the emotional charge held within the visible world: presence, longing, memory and belonging.

The horse is central to my practice. I am drawn to its particular combination of strength and vulnerability, movement and composure. A horse can be powerful without being forceful, graceful without being delicate, and quietly intelligent without needing to perform. It is that complexity that keeps bringing me back to the subject.

I work across breeds and subjects, but the individual always comes first. Breed, setting and history may provide a starting point; character is what makes the painting.

Working in layered oils, I combine close observation and structured drawing with expressive brushwork, softened edges and deliberate incompletion. Warm, earthy colour and deep tonal contrasts allow the paintings to move between realism and suggestion, while preserving the weight and presence of the subject.

Flowing manes and tails are sometimes heightened to intensify the drama of movement, allowing the physical energy of the horse to become almost elemental without losing its dignity.

My work is rooted in tradition, but it is not an attempt to recreate the past. I am interested in what happens when the discipline and knowledge of traditional painting meet a more immediate, contemporary sensibility.

Scotland is an important part of that conversation. Its landscapes, architecture, mythology and cultural history provide an ongoing source of ideas, but more than anything I am interested in its sense of place the atmosphere, weather, memory and history that can be felt within a landscape.

The aim is to create paintings that feel elegant, grounded, atmospheric and enduring: connected to where they come from, but speaking in a personal and present voice.
